The LHS Difference

The Lutheran Home of Southbury, a nonprofit organization providing quality, compassionate, and comprehensive elder care in Western Connecticut, is recognized as the first nursing home to certify 100% of its staff in dementia care by the Connecticut Alzheimer’s Association. Our philosophy of care centers on the emotional and therapeutic benefits of providing a nurturing environment to residents with memory related disorders. The specific programs and practices that make the Lutheran Home of Southbury unique compared to traditional nursing homes include:
  • We maintain consistent staff assignments to create personal relationships between residents and staff.
  • Budgeted staffing for direct caregivers and recreation staff is greater than the state average.
  • Our staff includes three Master Trainers accredited by the Connecticut Alzheimer’s Association.
  • All staff members and volunteers receive ongoing training in the care of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.
  • Nurses' aides on each unit are lead by team leaders with many years of experience. Along with daily nurse screening, this helps to ensure that changes in residents' condition are acted on promptly.
  • Staff retention far exceeds state and national averages.
  • Our Medical Director serves on the board of the Connecticut Alzheimer’s Association.
  • Members of the LHS rehabilitation team (physical, occupational and speech therapists) actually are employed by the Lutheran Home unlike other nursing homes where therapists are contracted from an outside agency.
