Engaging Recreational Activities for All Residents
The Lutheran Home of Southbury Recreation Staff provide a variety of stimulating, purposeful activities each day that are appropriate for individuals possessing specific physical and/or cognitive capabilities.
Notable activities include exercise programs, sing-a-longs, outdoor gardening, indoor horticulture, picnics, arts and crafts, concerts, bingo, word games, table bowling, ice cream socials, pet therapy visits, visits from a local petting zoo, inter-generational socials, and fishing trips. Theater productions offer residents the opportunity to perform, even if they have physical limitations. A production of The Wizard of Oz was a hit, bringing in hundreds of family members.
Resident Council and Family Council meet monthly to explore ways to enhance the quality of life at the Lutheran Home of Southbury. The Family Council coordinates family events to celebrate special occasions with residents and with one another. In addition, the Family Council hosts a quarterly pot-luck dinner to bring resident family members together in an informal yet supportive setting.
Banquets and other celebrations for residents and family members include the Spring Carnival, Oktoberfest: a Fall Festival, the Southbury Guild Christmas Shopping Spree, and the Family Council Annual Picnic and Christmas Party- just to name a few!
Spiritual Support
LHS’ Chaplaincy Program meets the spiritual needs of individuals of many faiths. In addition to the staff and volunteer pastors who provide weekly Lutheran worship services, communion, and counseling for residents, pastors from local Catholic, Episcopal, Congregational, and Baptist Churches volunteer at LHS regularly to conduct worship services. In addition, Catholic Eucharistic Ministers and laypeople from various denominations visit to help meet the emotional and spiritual needs of residents. The LHS Chaplain holds monthly memorial services upon the passing of residents to support families, residents and staff as they grieve. All religious activities seek to bring the consolation of faith and to boost the spirits of residents.
